What I Learned from Today’s Puzzle
- LAME (40A: TikTok star Khaby) Khaby LAME is a social media content creator. As of this year, his account is the most-followed account on TikTok, with over 162 million followers. He is known for his short comedic videos. In many of Khaby LAME's videos, like this one, he silently mocks overly-complicated "life hacks" from elsewhere on the internet. Khaby LAME began posting videos in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, after he was laid off from his job.
- AGE (34D: "The ___ of Magical Overthinking" (Amanda Montell book)) The AGE of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality, published in April of this year, is Amanda Montell's third book. The book discusses how irrationality went mainstream. Amanda Montell's previous books are Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language (2019), and Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism.

Random Thoughts & Interesting Things
- WHIT (10A: Rhyme and synonym for "bit") For some reason, I am especially fond of clues and answers featuring rhyming synonyms. I have even joked that one day I'm going to construct a puzzle consisting solely of rhyming synonyms. Anyway, WHIT is a fun word that is a rhyming synonym of BIT.
- ATOLE (14A: Warm masa-based beverage) Of Mexican origin, ATOLE is a hot drink popular during Day of the Dead and Las Posadas celebrations. ATOLE is made with masa (maize dough), water, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla.
- THUMP (17A: Loud sound) and ROAR (18A: Loud sound) This puzzle is making some noise! Clue echoes for consecutive clues are especially fun.
- NEGOTIATION (20A: ___ coaching (service offered by 81cents to help close pay gaps)) Since 2018, 81cents has been "providing affordable, accessible, virtual NEGOTIATION support (and data!) for women and other underrepresented minorities." The organization's name is a reference to the fact that in the United States, the average woman earns 81 cents per dollar earned by the average man. Additionally, the average Black woman earns 61 cents per dollar earned by the average white man, and the average Latino man earns 86 cents per dollar earned by the average white woman.
- ANA (24A: Santa ___, CA) Santa ANA is a city in southern California. Santa ANA is part of the greater Los Angeles region, and is the county seat of Orange County.
- PHASE (26A: Luteal or follicular) The menstrual cycle (a series of natural changes of the uterus and ovaries) consists of the follicular PHASE, ovulation, and the luteal PHASE.
- ADAM (58A: Skater Rippon) ADAM Rippon is a retired competitive figure skater. He won a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Also in 2018, he won season 26 of Dancing with the Stars with Jenna Johnson. In reading about what ADAM Rippon has been up to recently, I discovered that last year he was a contestant on a new reality TV competition series, Stars on Mars. The show features celebrities living together in a camp designed to simulate life on Mars.
- CATNAP (1D: Quick feline snooze) My cat, Willow, say, "Did someone say CATNAP?" I'm on it." She's also a fan of WAG (35A: Tail movements).
- ATHENA (2D: Greek goddess of wisdom) In ancient Greek religion and mythology, ATHENA is a goddess associated with wisdom, warfare, and handicraft.
- NOUGAT (3D: Chewy Toblerone ingredient) and TOOTH (7D: 3-Down might get stuck to one) I enjoy Toblerone, a Swiss chocolate, NOUGAT, almonds, and honey bar characterized by its unique shape of joined triangular sections. However, the NOUGAT does in fact, have a tendency to stick to one's TOOTH (or teeth). The unique shape of Toblerone is said to have been inspired by the Matterhorn, a mountain in the Alps.
- ELMO (4D: Muppet with his own "world") ELMO's World is a segment on Sesame Street. It is hosted by ELMO, of course, and is designed to appeal to younger viewers. ELMO's World takes place in a crayon-drawn version of ELMO's apartment.
- SEPT (5D: Bi Visibility Day mo.) Bi Visibility Day is observed each year on SEPT. 23.
- TARO (9D: "The Polynesian potato") TARO is a traditional staple food of the Polynesian people. Many of the ways TARO is prepared are similar to ways potatoes are served, leading to TARO's nickname, "the Polynesian potato."
- HUALAPAI (11D: Arizona tribe) The HUALAPAI is a federally recognized tribe located in northwestern Arizona. I learned about the HUALAPAI when we saw the tribe's name as a theme answer (in a puzzle by Erik Agard) on January 3, 2022. The HUALAPAI has about 2,300 members enrolled in the tribe, about 60% of whom live on the HUALAPAI Reservation in northern Arizona.

The podcast's name refers to the linguistics term code-switching, which refers to a speaker alternating between two or more languages or language varieties in the context of a single conversation.
- HAWAI'I (27D: "___ Pono'i" (anthem with lyrics by King David Kalakaua)) "Hawai'i Pono'ī" (meaning "Hawaii's Own") was written by King David Kalākaua – a former king of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. The song was adopted as the national anthem of the Kingdom of Hawai'i in 1876. The song is now used as the anthem of the U.S. state of Hawaii.
- REREAD (29D: Savor again, like one's favorite book) To me, REREADing a book is relaxing. It's comforting to know the story (except for the parts I've forgotten), and I always pick up on details I hadn't noticed previously. I'm currently in the midst of a REREAD of the Thursday Next series of books by Jasper Fforde.
- HAM RADIO (36D: Communication method with a meat in its name) HAM RADIO refers to the use of RADIO frequencies for non-commercial exchanges. When I first read this clue, I thought, "I don't know that," and started to move on. Then HAM RADIO popped into my head and I realized I did know it. I credit the TV show Only Murders in the Building for this answer being readily at hand. In the show's current season, HAM RADIO is playing a role, the extent of which remains to be seen.
- EVS (38D: Cars that need charging, for short) EVS here stands for "electric vehicles." Instead of occasional stops at the gas station for fuel, EVS require occasional charging of their batteries. As an EV owner, I'm always happy to see these cars get a shoutout.

- STRAP IN (31A: "Get ready!")
- MOO (50A: Cow's "udderance")

Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis
- NEGOTIATION (20A: ___ coaching (service offered by 81cents to help close pay gaps))
- HERE WE GO AGAIN (36A: "It's the same story for the hundredth time")
- SO HELP ME GOD (53A: Words ending an oath)
EGO TRIP: Each of the theme answers contains the word EGO, which is traveling (i.e. taking a TRIP) from the left side of the puzzle to the right side in the grid: NEGOTIATION, HERE WE GO AGAIN, and SO HELP ME GOD.
I am a fan of the work of both of the constructors of today's puzzle, and was delighted to see their names together as collaborators. This puzzle is taking us on a nice little EGO TRIP as the EGO makes its way from left to right and top to bottom in the grid. Thank you, Erik and Jasmeet, for this enjoyable puzzle.
